Social media really went main stream a couple of years ago even though it’s still a new medium to many. According to Google Trends, social media marketing began showing a huge interest in 2006 and doesn’t look like it will be slowing down any time soon. But as you look at the growth of the social web, will social media marketing work for any business?

When the internet was a boom in the 90’s, many businesses were very slow to adopt this new method of marketing into their current marketing initiatives. It was the early adopters that took this new medium and became the leaders in the online world. In today’s digital business world, if a business doesn’t have a website, they are missing a huge opportunity in reaching their target audience or being taken seriously as a business.

Social media marketing is the new frontier

Even though social media marketing is the new frontier the same as when the internet was a boom and it has been around for a while, will you ignore this powerful new medium to connect with your audience online? Online media is busy replacing traditional media such as newspapers, yellow pages, ads, print, and direct mail. I’m not saying this will disappear fast, but social media has become the best and easiest way to engage and communicate directly with your target audience on the social media channel they are comfortable with.

I know there are many businesses that are still asking if their customers are actually using the internet to find solutions to their problems and looking for relevant information – YES! The new question should be how can you engage with your target audience on the social web to better your business. Now is the time to start working on your social media strategy and how the social web can be used to support your business objectives.
