YouTube is a video sharing site that gives its users the ability to upload and view videos online. The obvious benefit of using YouTube is that videos have the potential of becoming viral, getting passed from website to website, e-mail to e-mail or even from one blog to the next. Social Media Marketing (SMM) is about being conversational, its almost the same as like having a conversation with your friends at a coffee shop. Combining these two medium is a power move that will guarantee you success for your business, if done correctly. Memeburn.com tells us 6 things you might not know about YouTube.

There’s a few things most of us know about YouTube. It’s fairly common knowledge for instance turned seven this year and that it’s the most popular video-sharing platform on Earth.

Everybody of course knows that it’s great for procrastinating, but there are probably a good few things you probably don’t know about it. There may also be some things you really don’t want to know about YouTube (especially when it comes to some of the content). These are not those things

1. Its social community is actually pretty big

We tend to think of YouTube as social media, but would probably be hesitant to call it a social network. Thing is, it can lay claim to a community of 100-million or so people who can “like”, share, or comment on content.

2. We really love sharing YouTube videos

Okay, so one look at your Facebook and Twitter feeds could tell you that we’re not exactly shy when it comes to sharing. What you might not know is that 700 videos are shared on Twitter every minute and that 500 years worth of YouTube videos are watched everyday of Facebook.

3. It’s global, but not totally

YouTube Channels come from 110 countries that post videos in 54 languages. That’s pretty impressive, but it also accounts for only half of the world’s 200-odd sovereign states. The service is also now localised in some 39 countries and regions.

4. The numbers are mind-boggling

YouTube recently claimed that 72 hours of video are uploaded to the site every minute, while otherssuggest that it’s closer to an hour a second. No one would be uploading if people weren’t watching though. Over 4 billion videos are viewed a day, and 800 million unique users visit YouTube each month.

5. Angry Birds is a YouTube sensation too

Along with Red Bull, Angry Birds maker Rovio has the most viewed brand channel, with over 1 700 years worth of videos played and 57 years every month. That’s according to social stats tool Social Bakers.

6. Google’s killing when it comes to media on YouTube

Okay, so maybe it shouldn’t be surprising that the company that own YouTube is good at pushing its own content but it slightly odd that Google shares top spot in the media channel rankings with games review specialist IGN.
